Dr. Acary is well-known for his passion in advancing the knowledge and treatment of neuromuscular diseases. In 1984, after completing his medical residency in Neurology, Dr. Acarytook up postgraduate studies focusing on Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. Despite its rarity, he recognized the urgent need for further investigation in this area, which fueled his determination to make a difference.
After earning his Master’s degree, Dr. Acary pursued a doctorate program with a special focus on studying manifesting carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Seeking to expand his research and expertise, he went to Columbia University, where he worked closely with Professor Arthur Hays, a renowned neuropathologist. During his time at the Division of Neuropathology in Presbyterian Hospital, New York, he delved deep into the intricacies of the nervous system.
In 1992, Dr. Acary returned to Brazil and seized a crucial opportunity to establish a dedicated sector solely devoted to studying neuromuscular diseases. Through this initiative, he fostered collaborations on a national and international scale, creating an environment conducive to cutting-edge research.
Currently, Dr. Acary holds the position of Affiliated Professor in Neurology and leads the Neuromuscular Division at the Federal University of São Paulo – UNIFESP. His current research focuses on integrating advanced imaging techniques like ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to investigate various myopathies, with a particular emphasis on skeletal muscle.
Dr. Acary has a keen interest in exploring mitochondrial diseases and studying the impact of mitochondrial deletions on the aging process. He is actively involved in advancing the understanding and treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy through the exploration of oligonucleotide therapy.
